The German Family Panel pairfam (Panel Analysis of Intimate Relationships and Family Dynamics) is a multidisciplinary, multi-actor, longitudinal study for the analysis of private living arrangements in Germany. It is funded as long-term project by the German Research Foundation (DFG) and was launched in 2008 with a baseline sample of 12,402 randomly selected anchor respondents in three cohorts born between 1971-1973, 1981-1983, and 1991-1993. The study is designed to run for 14 years with annually conducted interviews. The parallel inclusion of partners, parents, and children of anchor persons (when applicable) allows researchers to study attitudes and mutual interdependencies of family members as they develop over time and in different phases of life. The survey data are available free of charge to the scientific community.
According to the criteria of the German Data Forum the Research Data Center pairfam ensures access to the fully prepared and documented data of the German Family Panel for scientific research. It also provides extensive assistance for data user in terms of regularly conducted data workshops and user conferences, a permanently updated website, and a hotline for individual consultations.
Access to the data requires researchers to conclude a user contract with pairfam. Individuals with a valid user contract are authorized to internally disseminate the data to third parties from the same research context. Detailed information with regard to data access as well as all relevant forms can be found on the project website. Secured workstations in Chemnitz and Bremen (Germany) are set up for analyzing regional based macro indicators together with the pairfam survey data.
